Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here—one of whom was his own grandfather—were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

"A tense, moving, and wondrously strange first novel. The photographs and text work brilliantly together to create an unforgettable story."

- John Green, New York Times bestselling author of Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska

"A haunting and out-of-the-ordinary read, debut author Ransom Riggs' first-person narration is convincing and absorbing, and every detail he draws our eye to is deftly woven into an unforgettable whole. Interspersed with photos throughout, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a truly atmospheric novel with plot twists, turns, and surprises that will delight readers of any age."

- Amazon.com editorial review

"An enjoyable, eccentric read, distinguished by well-developed characters and some very creepy monsters . . . dark but empowering."

- Publisher's Weekly

"An original work that defies categorization."

-Library Journal

Hi there,

I just downloaded the first 3 chapters of your book and I am enjoying it immensely! I can't wait to share it with my husband because I'm sure he'll love it.

I'm definitely getting myself a copy of it when it comes out.

Keep up the good and interesting work.

This book was absolutely amazing! I bought it yesterday, and finished reading it just now. I couldn't put it down! I'm completely in love with the characters so I'm hoping there will be more books to follow about Miss Peregrine and her peculiar children. The story ended with so many unanswered questions! Also, I'm extremely excited for the movie!

I was wondering where you found the photographs for it. Old photos are a hobby of mine, and I sometimes have difficulty finding them.
Thanks!

I just finished reading this book and all i have to say is "Wow." I usually don't like things that creep me out but i couldn't stop reading! And the end just left me hanging, will there be another? Oh, I hope so. I also can't wait for this supposed movie.

This book was fantastic! I read it all in one afternoon/evening. But I'm just wondering, since it ends so abruptly and without resolution, is there a part 2 coming and when will it be out?

Thank you.

Fell completely in love with this book. Is it going to be a series? Please say yes!!

Started reading the book today...couldn't--wouldn't-- stop reading until I had finished! 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' is different from other fantasy novels because this world that Riggs has invented and so perfectly told about is connected to reality, giving it the possibility in the minds of the readers that it does, in fact, exist. After finishing the last page, I found myself thinking about the future of Jacob and his friends. I was so connected to them by Riggs' storytelling that I couldn't wait to read what would happen next. I sincerely hope that this haunting and wonderful novel will soon see a sequel!

I so thoroughly enjoyed "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children!" It is by far one of my favorites! Passionate about reading, photography, and gifted children, this book appealed to me so! I was so surprised to learn that the photographs were not fakes and that Riggs was able to weave the story around them. How creative! How peculiar! How genius! Just looking at them, you can only wonder of the story behind them. They're so interesting! Thank you for this fabulous trip to Cairnholm Island! I could imagine the entire island because the words painted the pictures so carefully in my mind. I love the way Riggs intertwined actual history into his story too (WWII, Jeffrey Dahmer...) This made the story seem even more REAL! Brilliant! This book would make a great movie! I am recommending it to everyone, especially peculiar children I know and teach. Any chance there will be a sequel? I'd love to know what happens next!

July 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth McCall

The ending is a bit of a cliff hanger. Will there be a sequel???

July 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshBev1

This sounds like a very interesting book for my daughter. She really likes these kinds of stories.

This is possibly the best book I have ever read! The pictures really do work brilliantly with the story and the writing is absolutely phenomenal!!! Riggs is clearly a very gifted writer and the end of the book left a lot of room for a sequel which i am praying he comes out with soon.

Throughout reading this book I found myself growing to love the characters. I found myself getting drawn into the novel. I could see the world amongst the pages and I felt as if I was in the book. After exploring Jacob's world I must say that I am thoroughly impressed by the story that unfolded. It has been a few years (before my college carrer) since I have been able to sit and loose myself into the hours of the night with a good book. I just want to say thank-you Mr. Riggs and the best of wishes with your success in future novels.

Thoroughly Satisfied

I just finished reading "Miss Peregrine" and I wanted to tell you how much I loved it! It is a wonderful story and the idea of illustrating it with the vintage photos was brilliant! I sincerely hope that someday you are able to write a sequel and we'll be priviledged enough to find out what happened to Emma, Jacob, The Bird and all the other great characters and how they stop the end of the world as we know it.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a gripping, and peculiar book. It was chosen by a friend, Mary, as the next novel for our book club. I finished it today, and our book club meets tomorrow evening at a Thai Restaurant. I look forward to discussing this quirky, imaginative tale. Riggs has managed to create a story both vividly real, and wildly fantastic, peppered throughout with curious old photographs.
It was interesting that the story begins in Florida, where I reside, and continues off the coast of Wales. I traveled to Wales on a ferry from Dublin, Ireland, my home town, when I was about 21. The descriptive passages brought back memories of wild, and windswept terrain. This first novel is a great start to what can only be a fantastic ride for readers of all ages, and nationalities. I look forward to the film's release with excited anticipation.

Just finished Miss Peregrine. I would say that it is definitely one of the most intriguing books I have ever read. I plan on spreading the word to friends and relatives! Now the question I am sure everyone asks... Do you have a sequel planned?

Thanks for writing this!
It's so different and definitely not what I was expecting. I had chills when I picked it up at the bookstore.
Just finished it and I'm still creeped out, yet intrigued.

i found your book spellbinding and entertaining. i absolutely loved it! very few times i find myself finishing a book in less than 24 hours, however, i finished yor book in less than 18 hours and it hurt so much...in a good way. i do hope you create a follow up or two. there are so many questions to be answered, places to be explored and hollowgast to be conquered. thank you for such an interesting and wonderful story to add to my collection of "must read" books. your hard work is greatly appreciated.

is there going to be a second one coming out for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and are you going to make a movie of this book or books.

Absolutely loved 'Peculiar Children', stayed up really late reading. Thoroughly unique and imaginative and I loved the photos; one of my favorite things is old photos in antique stores, wondering who/what/where/when. Keep writing! I think my granddaughter is a bit young at 8 but I will turn her on to the book in a couple of years! Thanks for a great read!

p.s. the Bodie photos really brought back memories of travel with my dad in the 60s-- I was entranced by Bodie. Thanks for reminding me!

It is the 14th of August, 2011, and 7:15am where I am. Yesterday, I found this book at the store, couldn't bear to not buy it, and just started reading it around midnight. I stayed up through the night, ignoring entirely the fact that I'm going to regret not sleeping later today, and read this book, from front to back--it drew me in and kept me focused for almost 7 hours, with little interruptions. Nothing can do that. Being given a chance to talk to my long-dead idol couldn't keep my attention that long.

This book was amazing, incredibly well-written, and the only one of its kind that I have ever read or even heard of. Like Mr. Frank Portman, I'm an aspiring writer myself (though the things I try to write rarely mention birds) who is very easily discouraged, and reading through this book has actually inspired me to try again.

Thank you, Mr. Riggs, for this brilliant book that I will surely reread many more times throughout my life, and for motivating me to get off my ass and pursue my dream with something more than a pathetic, lazy excuse for half-hearted determination. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel to this.

Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children.....wow~ Just finished the book last eve. You did a great job weaving this story. I read a review in a high school newspaper and went searching for a copy. Blending the photographs and text was an intriquing hook. Kudos to the folks who saved the pics and shared them with you.

August 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRansom Riggs

Dear Mr. Riggs,

Please, please tell me that you are working on a sequel to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
I bought this book about a month ago on a whim. Something about the cover caught my eye and I just couldn't look away. I kept coming back to it over and over until I finally read the first few pages and was hooked. I had to buy it. Since then I have read it three times, cover to cover.
I am an avid reader, but I usually have a very hard time finding books that captivate me the way yours has. The story, the characters, the pictures! Everything about your book drew me in, especially how the story seemed to flow FROM the pictures instead of manipulating them.
I understand this is your first novel, so the follow-up may be a long time in the making, but I do hope there will be a follow-up.

This book was beautifully put together using strange images to back up the even stranger story! Read it in only a couple of days it was so good! But I need to know... will there be a sequel?
