Miss Peregrine: the Movie!

I'm thrilled to finally be able to announce this most exciting bit of news: the film rights to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children -- after what the Hollywood Reporter called "a heated auction" -- were snapped up by 20th Century Fox.  Now accepting casting suggestions!

There is only ONE child you should use, if you need child actors.....www.gabesays.net

He is a professional actor, I worked at a small casting place and met his wonderful family and Gabe about 5 years ago. Since then we have become friends and I must say he has a great family! No, we're not related.

Gabriel Eggerling takes direction well, has an amazing imagination, and is an actor to watch.

Good Luck on your project. I wish you much success!

Wow! That is so great! Congratulations! I discovered you through a friend who posted your Salton Sea video on facebook. You are really talented and your stories are amazing. Looking forward to the book! I'm going to tell our library to order it.

Thanks again.

Yessss!!!! I was begging for a film the whole way through reading it. I can't wait to see the book come to life. (Not that it hasn't already through some of your videos!) -- And finally, an author after my own heart! Someone who does RESEARCH to make things come alive not only in their writing but in their own imagination. Why can't more writers do that? It is always painfully obvious when they don't.

Awesome book. Excited for the movie. Great work. Best of luck!

We used 10 yr old Kia Pegg in a short film recently and she was really good. She was even nominated for best Actress for it at a Cannes 2011 fringe event.

It isn't really that surprising as she has already done Toast with Helena Bonham-Carter and been cast as Vicious Vicky in the Horrid Henry 3D feature. I can put you in touch with her Dad or Agent if required. IMDB profile No is nm3961105

No casting ideas, but as a director and photographer myself, I'd give a reasonably valuable organ to help out / be involved with it.... I bought the book this morning, and can't put it down already. Website's up there, my videos have cumulatively had over a million views on youtube (mostly music promos) so I'm serious... let me be involved!

Hello,

I'm currently enjoying reading your book but, as a linguist working as a translator and English teacher, one thing is bugging me - your use of articles in British English. You use "take A piss" (to urinate) where it should be "take THE piss" (to make fun of, take liberties with, etc.). As the hero is an American, it could well be that he can't hear the difference in the pronunciation of "a" and "the", but the little article drastically changes the meaning...

Yours respectfully,
Minachac

Tim Burton has got to direct this movie...

Can I sneakily suggest myself? I adored this book and would love to be apart of the film! And I'm sure you're getting a million of these, but you can't blame a girl for trying :)

Just finished the book and yes, casting ideas were floating through my head. Heck, I think you just use the whole cast of Super 8 and you'd be just fine, especially Joel Courtney as Jacob (he'll be older when they do the actual filming so he'll be perfect!) and Elle Fanning as Emma. Use everyone else as some of the children. I can't wait to see the movie...I hope it's not a let down. It has huge shoes to fill.

I bought three copies of your book, which arrived today. I'm giving away two copies to creative people, and I'm keeping the third just for me.

Congrats on selling the movie rights! The book trailer is delightfully creepy, which got me to thinking... I don't know if there's a part for her, but I would think Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in The Addams Family, would be perfect.

June 21, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKitty

For some reason, I just kept picturing Paul Giamatti as Jacob's dad. It was something about the scene where it tells Jacob that he knows his mom's going to leave him some day. Oh! Elle Fanning would be spectacular as Emma!

Just finished your novel, 'Peculiar Children...' Enjoyed it very much. Hope to read more! Have spent some time around the Salton Sea myself, speaking of peculiar.... I also drove out to see 'Salvation Mountain' with my daughter. An amazing place. We arrived not too long after a bus load of Chinese tourists had been there...a three to four hour bus trip from San Diego (one way!)

I personally think Ezra Miller would be a good choice as Jacob. He's a quirky actor who could play the part well. We don't need a typical knockoff disney kid like the ones they had in Super 8. Go for quality, not quanity.
You have amazing gifts in writing and I would love to work with you one day. I am a young aspiring actor and writer at 16, and making book trailers would be one of the best jobs I could ask for.

Oh my gosh?!?!? Really that's great! I literally just finished your book today and had no idea that it just came out a few weeks ago! And now the possibility of a movie?! Just make sure they stay as true to the book as possible. Don't let Hollywood push you around into what they feel is right.

The book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was exceptionally well thought out. I loved the story and especially loved the old photographs. I hope the movie will be just as good and hope the director will keep to book as much as possible and use it as a guideline for the movie. I can't wait for the movie to hit the theaters.

July 28, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelsey B

My favorite character in the book is Emma... she has so much on her mind but doesn't want to share her past with Jacob do to her relationship with his grandfather. I hope I can have the honor of auditioning for her character in the movie if I can even make it to a casting call.

July 28, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelsey Bock

Allow me to be in your movie. Seriously. It's so amazing I can't even. But if I can't participate at least try to get the casting director to cast unkowns. Except Maggie Smith as Miss Peregrine. Because she's amazing <3

First, I feel a need to say that I am not an author, nor am I anywhere near becoming one. I just had to take a moment to stop by and say how much I loved the novel. It's my new favorite book and I have been telling everyone I know to read it. I also had to say that I hope you are kept as a consultant for the movie. Your YouTube videos are great. I feel like such a stalker for knowing this but I found out that you went to Kenyon and had a complete teenage-girl-freak-out. I live in Ohio and one of my friends will be starting there in the fall (needless to say, I didn't realize how well known Kenyon is) and is planning on majoring on English. I apologize for the unrelated thoughts but I did not think about what to write before I started typing this comment. In summary, your writing is wonderful, I love each and every one of the peculiar children (Enoch is rather unsettling though), I am extremely excited for both the sequel and the movie, and I would kill for a part in the movie. Even if the part were not on film and required cleaning the dressing rooms. As a nobody in Ohio, I would accept that job gratefully.

I think thatttt Emma should be played by chloe grace moretz and Miss peregrine should be the teacher from Harry Potter(Maggie Smith). that is who I pictured when I read the book

I've read the novel of this movie. And I really liked the story of this novel. The story of this movie is really so full of mystery. This film can make the audience became very curious about the end of the story, starting from the weirdness that occurs in an orphanage and children who disappeared suddenly.

Ah yes Mr.Riggs, I forgot to mention yesterday that I believe Mr. Tim Burton would be a brilliant director to work with on your movie, I feel his imagnation is perfect to help portray the book wonderfully! Have a great day!

This book was one of the best I have read in a long time! I couldn't thank you enough for the novel and I can't wait for the second one. Please keep writing books in this style! You did such an awesome job! As for my movie opinion, please! And I mean please don't let them make a horrible movie. Too many great books have been turned into horrible movies and I would be so sad for that to happen to such a great book. This book is beyond wonderful, and I am expecting the movie to be a spitting image. Please again Mr.Riggs, don't let hollywood ruin your book!

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrittany

I think you should have Jodelle Ferland in this movie! She's done some horror films and has the look of a peculiar child! I think that she would be great!

CONGRATS!! :D
Here's some suggestions for Jacob:

- Taylor Handley (Okay he's not sixteen but...it could work? I'd suggest looking at his movie 'Zerophilia')
- Spencer Treat Clark (2009 remake of 'The Last House on the Left')
- Michael Seater (The Canadian show 'Life with Derek')
- Logan Lerman

(Those are just guys I can see pulling off Jacob's personality.)

Emma I picture:

- Emily Browning ('The Uninvited', 'Sucker Punch', 'Sleeping Beauty,' 'A Series of Unfortunate Events', etc. She is LOVELY.)
- Chloë Grace Moretz (in '500 days of summer')

That's really cool. Hi, I'm River. Suffice to say, I'm just a kid, but I've read the book more than once. It's one of my favorites, and I hope the movie doesn't completely wreck the experience.

Congrats!! Read the book, it was excellent. Looking forward to the movie. Read today who would pen the screenplay and that Tim Burton is a possible director. Not my favorite, but he could really do this kind of story justice. This is great!!

Go for unknown/undiscovered talent. Would bring more mystery to the movie

Emma Watson for Emma!

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMe

So... i think that if you haven't already started casting yet, I would recommend logan learman, william mosely, or jake t. austen to be Jacob; elle fanning would be perfect as Emma, and Emma Thompson should play Miss Peregrine. :)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterOlivia

The book is the best thing I've ever read and the thought of a movie is even more exciting! I'm guessing that the auditions wouldn't be open? Sorry to ask that, I'm you've gotten a lot of questions about this already...

February 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKayla

Tom Felton or Alan Rickman would be awesome!

February 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMegan Ochoa

Maggie Smith NEEDS to be in this somewhere. Maybe Miss Peregrine or another ymbryne, but she is built for this.

February 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDawn Betts-Green

I think for casting you guys should REALLY seek out new talent. They're so many actors that we already see all the time in almost every movie so it'd be nice to have a few fresh new faces showcasing their talent. Maybe you guys should do a national search like they did for 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'.

Just a suggestion. :)

Loved this story. The cover is what caught my eye- ordered it and could'nt put it down. Sad I'm finished. But so looking forward to what I read on your blog!!! I am a Tim Burton fan and he is perfect for directing this movie version. Cant wait for book 2 either!!! Great job!

Samantha Steele is an amazing actress. I've seen her in a few plays and read all her books (she's an author, too). I think she could pull off a couple characters... check her out, she's good, even if I'm a year late pointing her out!

I would personally love to see Helena Bonham Carter in the role of Miss Peregrine. I think it'd be something different for her but I really feel like she would pull it off perfectly.

As for everyone else, I think "no-named", "just starting" people should play the peculiars. As I was reading, I couldn't really see anyone I've heard of as the faces except Helena.

I would however, love to play Fiona. I fell in love with her the moment we met her. I've got Irish blood in me but am dreadful with the Irish dialect. Still! She only had one or two lines in the book. I can play a great mute! ;)

Just a thought, but the two main child actors of "Hugo" fit in nicely. So erm... Asa Butterfield as Jason and Chloe Grace Moretz as Emma? They seemed good enough in "Hugo".
